Azithromycin is a prescription medication used to treat many bacterial infections such as those of the lungs and airways, eyes, ears, sinuses, skin, throat, and infections from sexually transmitted diseases. Azithromycin has been used off-label as prophylaxis for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in these patients. However, a trial published in JAMA last year suggested that long-term azithromycin use increases the risk of relapse and death in patients undergoing allo-HSCT as treatment for hematologic malignancies. The FDA said it is reviewing additional data and will communicate its conclusions and recommendations when the review is complete.
