Both drugs are designed to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone -- the androgen that causes male pattern baldness. Between finasteride and dutasteride, finasteride is the older drug.

Finasteride oral tablet is available as the brand-name drugs Proscar and Propecia. Generic drugs usually cost less than the brand-name version. In some cases, they may not be available in every strength or form as the brand-name drug.
