Xanax is a prescription medication used to help alleviate behavioral problems in kitties such as aggression, anxiety and fear. If your furry friend seems to be experiencing such issues, consult with your vet to see if a medication like Xanax might help him feel relaxed and more like himself. Xanax is a type of depressant medication known as a benzodiazepine. The active ingredient in Xanax is alprazolam, which has a tranquilizing effect on your kitty. While some types of behavioral medications take a few weeks or months of use to show any results in your furry friend, Xanax produces results almost immediately. The medication works within a few hours by altering the chemical activity in your little one's brain that affects his reactions to stressful or scary situations, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
It works by depressing activity in several areas of the brain which leads to several desired effects. It works as an anti-anxiety treatment, as a sedative, as a suppressor of seizure activity, and as a muscle relaxer. The exact mechanism for creating these effects remains unknown. Alprazolam represents an improvement on the original diazepam in that it lasts longer in dogs, unknown in cats making it more practical than diazepam for oral use. The most common veterinary use for this medication is probably the treatment of panic disorders in dogs. Panic disorders differ from other forms of anxiety in that they have a more acute basis and seem to be associated with loud noise stimuli like fireworks or thunderstorms.

If you have an anxious cat on your hands, you might think that Xanax will do the trick in calming them down. Most cats are calm by nature, and only get agitated when you disrupt their day to day lifestyle.
